|| Character’s name
|| Pablo Vicario
||
|| Role in plot
||
Pablo Vicario is one of the more significant characters in this novel. He is the brother of Angela Vicario, the girl who accuses Santiago Nasar of taking her virginity and also the brother of Pedro Vicario. The two are twins, however Pablo is six minutes older. The two brothers carry out the murder of Santiago Nasar that unfortunate Monday morning after hearing he has taken the virginity of their sister, even though they appear to be close to Santiago himself in the novel. It seems that Pedro is the more assertive and forceful of the two, however it is Pablo who eventually persuades and urges Pedro to carry out the plan of killing Santiago.

|| Significance of name in work
|| Literal origin:
The name Pablo is the Spanish form of Paulus or Paul. In Latin, the literal name means "of little stature", an image which is reflected on his less dominant role, unlike his brother, Pedro Vicario.
Religious significance:
Pablo preached the gospel with Peter whose name means “Rock”. Pedro, Pablo’s brother in the novel, is a variant of the name Peter. Jesus chose this image of strength to build his church with Peter as his right hand. In this novel, Pablo is Pedro Vicario's brother, and seems to be a less powerful man in comparison to Pedro who is more “authoritarian” (59) and serves in the military for eleven months. Furthermore “Pablo Vicario had developed the strange dependence of a younger brother” (60) although he 6 minutes older. “Pedro Vicario, according to his own declaration, was the one who made the decision to kill Santiago Nasar, and at first his brother only followed along” (60). Ironically, after the Colonel takes away their first pair of knives, it is Pedro who was ready to give up on the plan while Pablo takes command.
